On social media you do not have minutes to win attention, you have moments. Whether it is a Reel, a TikTok or a YouTube ad, the opening seconds decide whether people keep watching or keep scrolling. These are the editing techniques we use to stop the scroll.
Start with the most interesting moment
Do not open with a logo, a slow fade-in or someone saying "Hi guys". Lead with the most striking shot, the result, or the problem your viewer cares about. You can explain the background later, once you have their attention.
Put a clear message on screen
Many people watch with the sound off. A short, bold line of text in the first frame tells them what the video is about and why they should care. Keep it to a few words and make sure it is easy to read on a small screen.
Create movement immediately
Motion catches the eye. A quick push-in, a fast cut, a whip pan or a product being revealed all signal that something is happening. A static, empty first frame is easy to scroll past.
Cut tighter than feels comfortable
Remove pauses, breaths and filler words. Short, rhythmic cuts that land on the beat of the music keep energy high. If a shot does not add something new, it probably does not need to be there.
Use sound with purpose
For viewers with sound on, a subtle hit, whoosh or music drop on the first cut adds impact. Keep the voice clear and make sure music and effects never drown it out.
Make the payoff worth staying for
A strong hook earns attention, but the rest of the video has to keep the promise. Deliver the value you teased, end with one clear call to action, and your audience will be far more likely to watch your next video too.
